Additionally, the late '70s and early '80s, perhaps more so than any other era in rock 'n' roll, were a time of widespread cocaine use. Band member Steve Lukather told Classic Rock via Louder that while Toto dipped into the white stuff back in the day, it wasn't that big a deal. We weren't as bad as most. But thanks to Mr. Kimball, that became like our badge of honor.
I stayed up all night. We all did. The next day my throat would be like ribbons," Poracaro said. Bobby had to, and he just wasn't delivering.
It's a rare band in which the leader is the drummer, seeing as how they're stuck behind a mass of snares and hi-hats way in the back of the stage. Fleetwood Mac was definitely Mick Fleetwood's baby, latter-day Genesis was sticksman Phil Collins' vehicle, and coming in a respectable third on that short list, Toto was Jeff Porcaro's band all the way. He formed the band in the first place, and bandmate Steve Lukather labeled him Toto's "figurehead.
What caused a outwardly-healthy seeming, relatively young guy to drop dead is a bizarre amalgam of factor s According to a story published in the Los Angeles Times on August 7, , Porcaro was working in his yard in the San Fernando Valley, spraying plants with pesticide, when he fell ill. By the time emergency workers arrived, he wasn't breathing, had no pulse, and his heart had stopped. After briefly reviving him, authorities transported Porcaro to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A Los Angeles County Coroner spokesman and some doctors who treated Porcaro attributed the death to a heart attack caused by an allergic reaction to inhaled pesticide spray. When the Los Angeles County Coroner released its official report on Porcaro a few weeks later, it ruled Porcaro's cause of death to be occlusive coronary artery disease, in layman's terms a hardening of the arteries, brought on by long-term cocaine use.
Tests found no trace of pesticide in Porcaro's system, but they did reveal traces of cocaine, along with benzoylecgonine , a cocaine byproduct. However, Toto member Steve Lukather wasn't happy with this conclusion at all, and disavowed the coroner's report as well as the news organizations that went ahead and published it.
That ain't gonna give somebody a heart attack, believe me. The rest of us were doing a hundred times more than that and we all lived to tell the tale. He didn't have gloves on. That's how the chemicals got into his skin. While Toto topped the charts and dominated both the Grammys and rock radio in the early '80s, sadly the band subsequently drifted into semi-obscurity thereafter, the fate of so many artists who were once on top of the world.
The music industry and music consumers are fickle, loving you one minute, totally over you the next. But behind the scenes, a legal battle and long-simmering personality conflicts were ripping the band apart.
They kept quiet during much of the next year, but last month the band announced they were returning in with a new lineup, a couple of solo records, and plans to tour the world once the pandemic clears. We just want to keep playing. And the fans will be happy to hear the music played by some of the guys that played on the original stuff. The band came together in after the various members played on albums by Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Seals and Crofts, and others. Three group members sing passably; a fourth, Bobby Kimball, is terrible — and, unfortunately, the lead vocalist.
Paich is chief songwriter, but most of his tunes are merely excuses for back-to-back instrumental solos. Toto is a band of skilled craftsmen without a mesmerizing mastermind: pros, but no poetry. The review may have been harsh, but it did touch on a key problem that vexed Toto for decades: They were a band without a true frontman.
Bobby Kimball was ostensibly the lead singer, but vocal duties were split between nearly every member of the band. That role was always just difficult for us to fill. Drummer Jeff Porcaro created much of the music near the end of the Toto IV sessions, and Paich contributed lyrics, but it was never pegged as anything special. We went with it, but we buried the track. No one in the band, besides maybe David, thought it was a strong song at all.
It wound up being our only Number One. That shows how little any of us know! But they were as uncool in the MTV era as they were in the punk period. We all have mullets and hair to the sky. We needed a stylist as bad as Stevie Wonder needs eyes. I mean, what was I thinking, man? They hired me. The guys had it up to their eyes with lead singers by that point. There was talk that I left and talk that they fired me.
At the end of the day, both things were true. They were dealt a heinous blow in when Jeff Porcaro died suddenly from a heart attack. He had been the foundation of their sound since their earliest days, and even Toto detractors concede that he was one of the greatest drummers of the rock era, working with everyone from Michael Jackson to Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen.
When we got the resurgence, I wanted to take full advantage of it. Pinpointing the exact start date of the Toto resurgence is difficult. Lukather himself dates the resurgence to December , when year-old Weezer fan Mary Klym launched the weezerafrica Twitter account and began demanding that her favorite band cover the song. She heard it on Stranger Things and felt that it was perfect for the Weezer treatment.
The cat refused to talk to me! You should be a little bit more thankful. But I got nothing bad to say about them. Some of them were cool, but Rivers really hurt my feelings. Weezer invited Steve Porcaro to play the song with them on Jimmy Kimmel.
